Wracked by guilt after covering up a murder, Mona — a northern Sudanese retired singer in a tense marriage — tries to make amends by taking in the deceased’s southern Sudanese widow, Julia, and her son, Daniel, into her home. Unable to confess her transgressions to Julia, Mona decides to leave the past behind and adjust to a new status quo, unaware that the country’s turmoil may find its way into her home and put her face to face with her sins.

IIn November 1975, the second trial begins against Pierre Goldman, a militant of the extreme left, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance for four armed robberies in which two pharmacists were killed. He protested his innocence in this last case and within a few weeks became an icon of the intellectual left. The young lawyer Georges Kiejman takes over his defense. But their relationship soon becomes strained. Goldman, who is elusive and provocative, risks the death penalty and makes the outcome of the trial uncertain.
